Description
SANSON D'ABBEVILLE (Nicolas). Asia in several new and accurate maps and in various treatises on geography and history. In which its empires, monarchies, states, customs, languages, religions, the wealth of its peoples, and the most beautiful and rare things in all its parts and islands are succinctly described in a beautiful and easy method. By Sieur Sanson d'Abbeville, Géographe Ordinaire du Roy.
A valuable and much sought-after first edition of the famous French Atlas of Asia by Nicolas Sanson (1600-1667), first printed in 1652.
Paris chez l'auteur rue de l'Arbre sec près de Saint Germain l'Auxerrois, 1652, in quarto, in its contemporary vellum binding, 1 f. title, (50) ff. text, 1 f. table f. privilege, 17 double-page maps with contours enhanced in colour.
Following on from Europe, the atlas of Asia is the second of four atlases in-4 that Nicolas Sanson (1600-1667), after working for Melchior Tavernier, took on to publish on his own account. The four works (Europe, Asia, Africa and America) were later combined. Because of the geographical area represented, it is unusual in that it includes a number of island maps: Japan, the Philippines, the Moluccas, the Maldives, Sumatra and Ceylon.
The text offers a geographical and non-mapping commentary drawn from ancient authors such as Ptolemy, but also from the accounts of modern travellers, in particular the Jesuits who spent time in China and Japan.
All but four of the maps bear the signature Peyrounin Sculp. They include a general map of Asia, one of Turkey, Anatolia, Sorie and Diarbeck, Turcomania Georgia, Arabia Petrea, Sophy's Empire of the Persians, the Empire of the Great Mogul, Presqu'Isle de l'Inde deça le Gange, Presqu'Isle de l'Inde au delà du Gange, Royaume de la Chine, la Grande Tartarie, les Isles du Japon, les Isles Philippines, les Isles Molucques, les Isles de la Sonde, Ceylan et les Maldives.
Well preserved work, the binding has an illegible stamp and numerous inscriptions, the maps are very fresh.
