Description
LALANDE (Jérôme, Director of the Military School Observatory) – A Summary of Astronomy. Amsterdam, published by Barthélémy Vlam, 1774, in-8, frontispiece, XXXII–464 pp. + 16 folding plates, contemporary full calf binding, smooth spine, marbled edges, title label in red morocco. Second, expanded edition. Complete with all 16 fold-out intaglio-engraved plates. Lalande was a pupil of Delisle and Le Monnier. He was sent to Berlin to write his thesis. He contributed to the publication of Edmond Halley’s works, to which he added a history of Halley’s Comet. Lalande subsequently joined the Collège de France. He achieved great renown for his work on the orbit of Venus.
