Description
[TURPIN DE CRISSE (Lancelot)] – Memoirs of Montecuculi, Commander-in-Chief of the Emperor’s troops. Paris, published by Ganeau, 1751, in-12, frontispiece, XL–520 pp., full marbled calf binding, plain spine with decoration, marbled edges. Montecuculi’s Memoirs are divided into three books. In the first two, he has set out all military principles, beginning with the simplest elements and progressing step by step to the most sublime ideas. The third contains his *Reflections on the Wars in Hungary*, from 1660 to 1664, during which Raimondo Montecuculi won the memorable Battle of Saint-Gothard against the Turks. Lancelot Turpin de Crissé has, for the most part, confined himself to explaining his author; yet, although imbued with respect for the talents of this great general, he does not feel obliged to always agree with him, and he refutes him where he puts forward claims that are inaccurate or erroneous. It is more than likely that a cannonball fired by Montecuculi killed Marshal de Turenne. Raimondo Montecuculi is said to have exclaimed: ‘Today a man has died who brought honour to humanity!’ 3 plates.
