Description
VIOLLET-LE-DUC (Eugène) – A Critical Dictionary of French Architecture from the 11th to the 16th Century. Paris, Bance, 1858, in-8, approx. 5,000 pp, paperback, in fair condition; would benefit from rebinding. All 10 volumes. One of the cornerstones of architectural scholarship. Viollet-Le-Duc is best known for his restoration projects (so numerous that it is difficult to compile a complete list). Yet it was through his writings that this Inspector-General of Buildings made his name. These writings demonstrate an immense knowledge of architecture. Yet, through the way he conveyed this knowledge and assessed current techniques, he stood at the threshold of a new era that he opened up for future generations. One thinks of the influence he had on the art of Prosper Morey, Bourgouin and Bérard, but one also thinks of Art Nouveau and even Frank Lloyd Wright, who recognised Viollet-le-Duc as pivotal to his own training.
