Description
BOURCIER – On the Nature of the Duchy of Lorraine. No place, no publisher, 1713, in-4, 130 + 12 pp., contemporary cardboard binding. No title page. The last 12 pages deal with the rights of the House of Lorraine over the Kingdom of Sicily. The author is Jean-Léonard Bourcier, Baron de Montureux, born in Vézelise (1649–1729), a magistrate from Lorraine and Attorney General at the Court of Lorraine. ‘The author takes Gérard of Alsace as the progenitor of the House of Lorraine, and seeks to prove that daughters cannot inherit the duchy. This is the work of a courtier who knows how to distort history or gloss over it to please his master. Mr Bourcier must have been ashamed of this work; this is no doubt why he chose to remain anonymous. ''First anonymous edition, published without a title at the end of the 17th century, of this very rare text, reprinted under the title ''Dissertation on the Origin and Nature...'' in Nancy in 1721. Noel 352, Barbier III, 398 and I, 1069, Favier no. 43.
