Description
FRANCE (Anatole) – The Life of Joan of Arc. Paris, Calmann Lévy, Publisher, 1952, in-4, 600 + 472 pp., green half-maroquin bindings with corners, smooth spines decorated with the Cross of Lorraine, covers preserved, SW bookplate on the front cover. Both volumes. Anatole France was a writer of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. He was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1921. He was a prominent figure during the Third Republic, both as a writer and as a literary critic. He played a part in the campaign for a review of the Dreyfus trial. Anatole France had a keen social conscience; he was close to the SFIO, but remained critical of the Communist Party. He published a vast number of works. *The Life of Joan of Arc* is his only historical work, but the text reads more like the work of a man of letters than that of a historian. Illustrations by Edy Legrand. Very good condition.
