Description
GILBERT (Nicolas) – The Works of Gilbert. Paris: Published by Dalibon, 1823, 8vo, frontispiece, XVI–3712 pp., red half-calf binding, plain spine with decoration and embossing. Nicolas-Joseph-Florent Gilbert, a writer from Lorraine, was born in 1750 at Fontenoy-le-Château in the Vosges. In 1770, he left Nancy, where he had been living since 1768, to go to Paris and join d’Alembert, who, despite his promises, failed to appoint him to a post as a tax collector. He then moved in the literary circles of the time and published plays, pamphlets and poetry. Shortly before his death, he published a work entitled *Odes* (which were inspired by several psalms), better known under the title *Adieu à la Vie* (*Farewell to Life*), which inspired Alfred de Vigny. It is believed that Gilbert died at the Hôtel-Dieu in 1780 as a result of a fall from a horse, or more precisely, following a trepanation operation. However, one might question the veracity of the circumstances surrounding his death. Indeed, the Romantics later undoubtedly created a ‘cursed poet’ myth based on the author’s life – an image of an unhappy poet rejected by his own era. In very good condition.
