Description
[DUCHESS OF LORRAINE] - [ROLLAND] (Aubert)] - The Life of the Blessed Philip of Guelders, Queen of Sicily, Duchess of Lorraine, Bar and Guelders. Since then, a nun at the Monastery of Saint Clare in Pont-à-Mousson. Toul, Claude Vincent, 1736, small 8vo, 1 blank folio, XVI–201 pp., 1 blank folio, pastiche binding (early 20th century) in full sheepskin, spine with raised bands, simply decorated, old red title label. The frontispiece portrait is missing; there is some minor rubbing to the binding, a few minor pinholes, and the top margin is slightly short; despite these flaws, a pleasant copy. Philippe de Gueldre (1464–1567), the second wife of Duke René II, retired to the Poor Clares convent at Pont-à-Mousson in 1519. On her death, the congregation produced a hagiography, the manuscript of which was published in 1585 on the initiative of her great-grandson, Cardinal de Vaudémont. this edition was subsequently reprinted, revised and republished on numerous occasions, both for the purposes of the Counter-Reformation in the first third of the 17th century and as a symbol of the waning fortunes of the Lorrain state in the 18th century. The present edition, published anonymously, constitutes the final revision of this work, the format of which suggests it was intended for a popular rather than a scholarly audience. Barbier attributes it to Aubert Rolland, a Franciscan friar born in Liffol-le-Grand, in the Vosges. Rare. Ex-libris by Albert Denis. (Barbier IV, 982).
