Description
[PICART (Benoit)] – A Defence of the Antiquity of the City and the Episcopal See of Toul. Against the preface to a book entitled *Chronological and Historical System of the Bishops of Toul*. Paris, Printed by Simon Langlois, 1702, in-8, II-52 pp. + 4 handwritten pages on the bishops of Toul, 19th-century paper board binding, bottle-green half-maroquin with small corners. The text was long and frequently attributed to Nicolas Clément, but its style and subject matter suggest that the true author is Father Benoit Picart. Benoit Picart, moreover, claims authorship of this text in his history of Toul. Our copy is enhanced by a lithograph by Blaisot depicting Toul Cathedral. Beaupré bookplate. Very fine condition.
