Description
[DECARIS] - BARRES (Maurice) - *Du sang de la volupté et de la mort*. Paris, Aux Editions du Bois Sacré, 1930, in-8, 8–306 pp., loose sheets in a padded cover, in a slipcase (slipcase in need of restoration). One of 301 numbered copies on white Dutch laid paper. With engravings composed with a burin by Albert Decaris, printed by Edmond Rigal; the typesetting was composed by Henri Kaeser. Maurice Barrès was born in 1862 in Charmes (Vosges) and died on 4 December 1923 in Neuilly-sur-Seine (Seine); he was a French writer and politician, a leading figure of French nationalism. The first strand of his thought is ‘the cult of the Self’. He asserts that our primary duty is to defend our self against the ‘Barbarians’, that is to say, against anything that might weaken it in the fulfilment of its own sensibility. The second pillar is summed up by the expression ‘the land and the dead’, which reflects Maurice Barrès’s shift towards republican nationalism and traditionalism, and his attachment to his roots, his family, the army and his native land. He remained one of the leading thinkers of the nationalist right during the interwar period. ‘Récits’ collection, vol. No. 33. Copy numbered 5,234/7,500, produced from the artwork by Jacques Daniel. Good condition.
