GERDOLLE and BRIQUET, publishers in Toul (Lorraine). Set of 16 uncut sheets of postcards (5x4 = 20 items) depicting the town of Toul, from the ‘Pittoresque’ series (the cathedral, the bishop’s palace—now the town hall, Rue de la République, the Rigny barracks, the Dommartin airship hangar, Saint-Gengoult, the Bois-l’Evêque camp, the Cours d’Alsace-Lorraine, etc.) and the surroundings of Toul: Pierre-la-Treiche, Ecrouves, etc., as well as the Vosges (Vagney Saint-Amé, Neufchâteau, Vaucouleurs, etc.) or the Argonne (Sainte-Ménéhould) 50 x 60 cm – minor imperfections, creases, tears. The negatives from the Gerdolle and Briquet firm are now held at the Meurthe-et-Moselle departmental archives. As an interesting aside, the biplanes and airships visible in the sky on some of these postcards are photomontages and appear in one photograph after another.
