Description
BORDEU (Théophile de). Studies on the Pulse in Relation to Seizures. Paris: de Bure l’aîné, 1756. In-12, 483 pp. Full marbled sheepskin binding, decorated ribbed spine, red edges. A rare first edition. Corners worn, joints and caps in need of repair, signs of wear. Théophile de Bordeu (1722–1776) was a renowned physician from Béarn and a proponent of the vitalist school alongside Barthez. He was a friend of Diderot, who asked him to write an article for the Encyclopédie and who made him one of the characters in ‘Alembert’s Dream’. His research into the pulse and the clinical indications it helped to refine led to considerable advances in practical medicine. He was also a champion of thermal spa treatments in the Pyrenees.
