ALVARADO (Francisco) Madrid, printed by E. Aguado, 1824–1825. Critical letters written by the Most Reverend Father Master Fr. Francisco Alvarado of the Order of Preachers, also known as ‘El Filósofo Rancio’. 4 vols. – Philosophical Letters. 1 vol. 5 vols. in-8 (20.5 x 14.2 cm), brown full sheepskin with grain, smooth, decorated spines, coloured title labels (contemporary binding). A collection of the principal writings of Francisco Alvarado (1756–1814), a Spanish Dominican known as ‘El Filósofo Rancio’, defending the monarchy, the Church and the Ancien Régime against the liberal ideas emerging from the Cortes of Cádiz and the French Revolution. A composite copy in similar bindings. Volume I, marginal verse gallery. Volume II, water stains and discolouration. Scratches and stains on the bindings; foxing. Provenance Colegio de Santo Tomás (repeated stamp).
