Description
BAUSSET (Louis-François-Joseph de) Paris, Baudouin frères, 1827–1829. Anecdotal Memoirs on the Inner Workings of the Court and on Certain Events of the Empire from 1805 to 1 May 1814. 4 vols. in-8 (21 x 13 cm), taupe glazed calfskin, three gilt fillets framing the covers, flat-ribbed spine decorated with gilt motifs, pebbled edges (contemporary binding). First edition. Illustrated with three portraits and a plate of medals as a frontispiece, two separate engravings, all engraved on steel, and nine folded sheets of lithographed facsimiles. These Memoirs were highly successful and inspired historians and novelists. They include the episode of Joséphine de Beauharnais’s feigned fainting spell upon the announcement of her divorce. Bindings slightly rubbed, spines somewhat darkened. Foxing (mainly in the first two volumes). Provenance W. Sloane Stanley (handwritten bookplate).
