Description
BELMAS (Jacques Vital) Paris, Firmin Didot frères et Cie, 1836–1837. Accounts of sieges carried out or withstood by the French on the Iberian Peninsula, from 1807 to 1814. 4 vols. in-8 (20.9 x 13.1 cm), mahogany half-shagreen with corner pieces, plain spine decorated with gilt motifs (contemporary binding) and 1 vol. large folio (70 x 52 cm), in dark blue half-shagreen, with a red morocco title label on the upper cover, plain spine (modern binding). First edition. Probably the finest work on sieges during the Peninsular Wars. This publication had been commissioned by Napoleon I, who had compiled the plans for the sieges of the Spanish War. The Restoration brought the project to a halt, but it was resumed in 1830 when Marshal Soult was appointed Minister of War. A very complete copy of this folio-sized atlas, containing 24 copper-engraved maps and plans, 15 of which are double-page spreads. The contemporary red morocco title label has been preserved and mounted on the upper cover. The Fondation Napoléon, drawing on the copy held by the BnF, lists only 4 volumes of text. Bindings slightly rubbed, spines faded; some foxing and pinholes. Provenance General Neumayer (handwritten label).
