Description
BOURGOING (Jean-François de)] Paris, Regnault, 1788. A New Journey to Spain, or A Picture of the Current State of that Monarchy. 3 vols. in-8 (20.1 x 12.6 cm), marbled sheepskin, ribbed spine decorated with gilt motifs, red title labels and green volume numbers (contemporary binding). First edition of this first substantial book on Spain. ‘This edition, dated 1788, has not been mentioned by any bibliographer: copies of it are, moreover, quite rare. Only the 1789 edition is cited, and, curiously, Bourgoing himself cites only that one’ (Foulché-Delbosc). Illustrated with 12 folded or double-page copperplate engravings, including a map of Spain enhanced with watercolour. The work is among the first to focus on the Balearic Islands, which are described in the second volume. Jean-François de Bourgoing (1748–1811), a French diplomat, writer and translator, served as Louis XVI’s legation secretary in Spain, then as ambassador for Revolutionary France. He was made a Baron of the Empire in 1809. Edges, top and bottom edges and corners slightly rubbed. A few foxing spots; a repaired tear in the white of the paper. Bibliography Foulché-Delbosc, *Espagne et Portugal*, no. 189. Palau y Dulcet, Antonio. *Manual del Librero Hispano-Americano*, 34055.
