FILHOL].– LAVALLÉE (Joseph) Paris, Filhol, printed by Gillé fils, Year XII – 1804–1815. Gallery of the Napoleon Museum. 12 vols., small quarto (25.1 x 15.5 cm), red half-shagreen with corner pieces, ribbed spine decorated with gilded grotesque motifs, gilt edges (binding from the second half of the 19th century). First edition of this remarkable gallery, published in 120 instalments. The set contains a portrait of Antoine Michel Filhol and 793 copper-engraved illustrations (plate 69 in the 10th volume is a duplicate). The final volume, which contains a ‘Historical and Elementary Course in Painting’, does not include any illustrations. All the copies we have seen contain a maximum of 720 plates. A fine copy, despite 7 leaves being completely torn in the 8th volume, with damage to the motifs of 6 figures. Some slight rubbing on the spine and headbands. Very slight foxing.
