Description
GOUVION SAINT-CYR (Marshal Laurent de) Paris, Anselin, 1831. Memoirs for the History of the Military under the Directory, the Consulate and the Empire. 4 vols. in-8 (21.5 x 13.5 cm) in red long-grain half-maroquin, spine with raised bands decorated with gilt and embossed motifs, top trimmed, cover of the first vol. preserved (bound by A. Mertens) and 1 vol. in-plano in red half-shagreen with broad bands, plain spine (bound by F. Doménech). First edition. Frontispiece, one (of two) folded facsimile plates and 5 (of 9) folded maps, all lithographed, and 9 folded printed plates. The atlas contains 18 large copper-engraved maps, including 3 folded ones (2 enhanced with watercolours), with a map numbered XIVbis. These Memoirs ‘are of exceptional quality. […] Like Thiers, who deemed them ‘remarkable’, one can say that they are by far the best of all those written by the marshals’ (Jacques Jourquin, Dictionnaire Napoléon, p. 817). A fine modern binding in the style of early 19th-century bindings. Some foxing; 2 maps uniformly browned; small tears on the last one. One facsimile and 4 maps are missing from the text volumes. Bibliography Tulard, 648.
