Description
JONES (John Thomas) London, Egerton, 1814. Journals of the sieges undertaken by the allies in Spain in the years 1811 and 1812, with notes. In-8 (21.2 x 12.6 cm), brown calfskin, gilt fillet binding, ribbed spine decorated with gilt motifs, title label in garnet calfskin, mottled edges (contemporary binding). First English edition illustrated with 9 copperplate engravings depicting maps of various Spanish towns and plans of military buildings that had been besieged. John Thomas Jones, an officer in the Corps of Royal Engineers of the British Army, had been sent on operations to the east coast of Spain. Repatriated to England following a serious gunshot wound, he wrote a scathing critique of the expedition and, in particular, lambasted the procedures employed by Wellington during military operations. This copy is enhanced by a handwritten copy of two letters from the Welsh officer in the British Army, Thomas Picton, to the Duke of Wellington, dated 10 November 1810. Restored binding, covers slightly rubbed, very slight foxing on a few leaves. Provenance William Granville Eliot (Ex-libris).
