LABORDE (Alexandre de) Paris, Printed by Pierre Didot the Elder, 1806–1820. A Picturesque and Historical Journey through Spain. 4 large folio volumes (56.5 x 42.5 cm), red half-morocco with corner pieces, ribbed spine decorated with gilt motifs, gilt edges (binding from the second half of the 19th century). First edition. This is the most important book on Spain published at that time. Publication was interrupted by the outbreak of the Spanish War in 1808, and volumes 2 and 3 appeared in 1811 and 1812. Laborde was able to complete the publication of his work in 1820. Engraved title page, 4 title vignettes and 274 plates (including 2 double-page maps), all engraved on copper. The plates sometimes contain several figures (349 in total), engraved on separate plates and joined together for printing. Excludes the portrait of Manuel Godoy, to whom the work is dedicated, which is very often missing. Bindings slightly rubbed, particularly at the joints. A few foxing spots, but a fine copy overall.
