Description
MONTHOLON (Charles-François, Count of) Paris, Martin Bossange & Co., Henri Colburn & Co., 1823. Memoirs for the History of France under Napoleon, written on St Helena, as dictated by the Emperor. 3 vols. in-8 (22.7 x 14.2 cm), red long-grain half-maroquin with corner pieces, ribbed spine decorated with gilt and blind-stamped motifs, untrimmed (contemporary binding). Only the first three volumes (out of 8) of this edition published in London at the same time as the original French edition. Folded facsimile. An interesting copy with fine provenance: the monogram of Louis Philippe d’Orléans (the future Louis-Philippe I) and the royal coat of arms in gold on the spines. Bindings slightly rubbed. A few very slight foxing spots. Provenance Louis Philippe d’Orléans (gilded monogram ‘LPO’ at the foot of the spines and gilded royal arms at the top of the spines – slightly different on the third volume). Bibliography Tulard, 1079. OHR, pl. 2577, stamp no. 11.
