In-4 (29.5 x 21.8 cm), dark green long-grain half-morocco with corner pieces, smooth spine decorated with gilt fillets, untrimmed (contemporary binding).
First edition.
Illustrated with 38 steel-engraved plates showing details of all the bas-reliefs on the Vendôme Column. (The title page lists 36 plates.) A two-colour lithograph has been added, showing a variant of the statue of the Emperor crowning the column.
A handwritten copy of an appointment by Napoleon has been placed at the beginning of the volume: ‘On the recommendation of our Prime Minister, who has brought to our attention the eminent qualities and virtues of Mademoiselle Gabrielle Bernard, we have seen fit to grant her the title of Marquise de xxx etc. ’ The document is signed ‘certified true copy, Angélique Gordon’.
Binding slightly rubbed. Foxing.
