VEDEL (Dominique-Honoré-Marie-Antoine, Count of) Paris, Imprimerie de Gueffier, 1823. A summary of military operations in Spain during the months of June and July 1808. In-8 (19.3 x 12.1 cm), brown half-calf with corner pieces, covers of laid paper, a gilded crowned monogram in the centre of the covers, ribbed spine decorated with gilded motifs, green title label (contemporary binding). First edition. A large folded lithographed map at the end. Dominique de Vedel (1771–1848), a Major General since 3 November 1807, took part in France’s Spanish campaign from December 1807 onwards, and was taken prisoner on 22 July 1808 during the famous capitulation at Baylén, for which Napoleon never forgave General Dupont. Released in November 1808, he was repatriated by ship to Toulon, where he was immediately arrested, imprisoned, tried by the Imperial High Court, stripped of his rank and struck off the roll of the Legion of Honour. He was, however, rehabilitated and reinstated to his rank by the Emperor on 1 December 1813. The binding is very slightly scuffed. A few slight foxing spots. Provenance The library of Eugène de Beauharnais. The initials ‘EA’ refer to Eugène de Beauharnais and his wife, Augusta-Amélie of Bavaria (crowned monogram on the covers). Bibliography Tulard, 1467.
