Maps and plans showing the principal movements, battles and sieges in which the British army was engaged during the war from 1808 to 1814 on the Iberian Peninsula and in the south of France.
Large folio (69.6 x 42 cm), brown half-maroquin with corner pieces, title in gold lettering on the front cover, ribbed spine decorated with gold motifs (publisher’s binding).
The only edition of this monumental atlas, remarkable for its precision.
Two title pages engraved on metal, 40 large maps, views and plans lithographed or engraved on steel (spanning two pages or folded), most of the maps enhanced with watercolours. Plates 5, 23, 25 and 39 have two and one ‘appliqué’ inserts respectively, showing the progress of troop movements. The list of plates is printed in blue.
None of the copies that have appeared on the market contained 40 maps (39 at most).
Binding slightly rubbed, corners worn, endpapers replaced. A few slight foxing spots.
