BEATO (Antoine) (c. 1825–1903) [ARCHAEOLOGY. PHOTOGRAPHY].– BEATO (Antoine or Antonio) Set of 10 original albumen prints. Antonio Beato (c. 1825–1905 in Luxor), an Italian-British photographer and brother of Felice Beato, is renowned for his photographs of the Mediterranean region and particularly those of Egypt. From 1862 onwards, he settled in Luxor, where he held a virtual monopoly on photographs and postcards. He published hundreds of photographs, mainly of sites in Luxor and Karnak. ‘ In Luxor, Beato’s business remained in operation for over forty years and even continued for a year after his death in 1905, with his widow struggling to keep the laboratory running throughout 1906” (Réveillac, p. 25). – Temple of Hathor, Philae Island (20 x 26 cm), slight creases. 2 copies. – Temple of Amenhotep, Luxor, during the flood (No. 123) (20.1 x 26 cm), slight creases at the corners. – Temple of Seti I, at Gurna, Thebes (20.1 x 28.6 cm). – Ram-headed Sphinx at Karnak (20.5 x 28.4 cm), repaired with adhesive tape over 0.5 cm at the top of the print, on the subject side. – Medenout, near Karnak (26 x 20 cm), signature ‘A. Beato’ within the photograph, small corner loss in the top right-hand corner. – Bas-relief, Temple of Mut, Karnak (25.8 x 20 cm). – Bas-relief, Luxor (19.3 x 28.4 cm), sun damage in the lower left-hand corner, very slight peeling towards the bottom right. – Horus presenting a sickle-sword to Ptolemy IX, with Cleopatra I and II behind him, Temple of Kom Ombo (19.6 x 25.6 cm).
