MONET (Claude) Vétheuil, 25 July 1880. Autograph signed letter to Hoschedé. 1½ pages, in-8 format, on a double-leaf sheet. Letter to his friend and patron Ernest Hoschedé. He informs him that he has been ‘asked to send one or three paintings to the painters’ exhibition announced for next Sunday, 1 August. […] If you’d like to include your painting of Île Saint-Martin, that might not be a bad idea.” He adds, to conclude his letter: “Wouldn’t you like to spend at least a day or two here? You must be suffering terribly in this heat.”   In the summer of 1878, Alice, Ernest Hoschedé’s wife, and their children moved to a house in Vétheuil, where they lived with Claude Monet and the painter’s first wife, Camille Doncieux, as well as the two sons they had together, Jean and Michel. According to some sources, Claude Monet and Alice Hoschedé had been in a relationship since 1875, or perhaps 1876. They continued to live together after the death of Monet’s wife, and went on to marry in 1892, just over a year after the death of Ernest Hoschedé. Tears along the horizontal fold.
