Description
[PARIS].– Two engraved maps of Paris. – BRAUN (Georg), HOGENBERG (Frans). Lutetia. Map known as ‘the map with the three figures’. Cologne, 1572. Copperplate engraving, 36 x 50 cm (image size), framed. The map is taken from the collection *Civitates orbis terrarum liber primus*. Very slight trace of a central fold. – BELLEFOREST (François de). The City, Town, University, & Suburbs of Paris. 1575. Woodcut, 43 x 56 cm (image size), framed. The map is based on Saint Victor’s map, showing Paris in 1550, and was published in the *Cosmographie Universelle du Monde*. The map is signed ‘Cruche’ in the lower left-hand corner, referring to the engraver Pierre Eskrich, who was originally from Paris but settled in Lyon in the mid-1560s. The maps have not been examined outside their frames.
