CÉSARÉE (Eusebius of) Rome, Johannes Philippus de Lignamine, 15 May 1476. Historia ecclesiastica. Small folio (30 x 21 cm), parchment, plain spine with handwritten title label (late 17th-century binding). [218] out of 220 folios, initials painted in red and blue. Edition edited by Rufinus Aquileiensis. Eusebius of Caesarea (264–338) wrote his Ecclesiastical History in 10 books during the lifetime of Crispus, son of Constantine. It ends upon the latter’s death. For a long time, this work was regarded as a historical monument of the greatest interest, particularly as it is the earliest surviving Ecclesiastical History.   There were two printings in the same year: the first includes a dedicatory epistle to Pope Sixtus IV, the second to Cardinal d’Estouteville. Our copy is from the second printing. A few old handwritten annotations. Missing the introductory blank leaf and the 9th folio. Small wormholes on the spine. Binding somewhat weak. Holes in the paper have been restored, occasionally obscuring a few letters; faint discolouration on almost all the leaves; a few pinholes.   Provenance Philippe Cénac (dry stamp, with the motto ‘Que sais-je?’, on the first blank endpaper).   Bibliography ISTC, ie00126000.
