HERRGOTT (Marquardt) Vienna, Leopold Johann Kaliwoda, 1737. Genealogia diplomatica Augustæ gentis Habsburgicæ. 3 vols. folio (45 x 28.4 cm), marbled calfskin, ribbed spine decorated with gilt motifs, title label and volume number in pale calfskin, marbled edges (contemporary bindings). I: [13] leaves, LXXII pp., 338 pp., [17] leaves; II: [17] leaves, 412 pp. (page 412 blank); III: [17] ff., pp. 413–851, [44] ff. First edition of this important and monumental publication on the history of the sovereign House of Habsburg. The volume is illustrated with 28 copperplate engravings, including 3 frontispieces, 1 large fold-out map, 15 double-page spreads and 9 single pages. The volume also contains 2 typographic plates set apart from the main text, as well as numerous vignettes, headers, footers and initials. In 1728, Herrgott was sent to the imperial court in Vienna as a diplomatic representative of the States of Brisgau. During his stay, he undertook an in-depth study of the imperial Habsburg family, which, after several years of research, culminated in a work ‘of great importance to the history of the House of Austria’ (Brunet). Bindings are scuffed with leather covers on the boards; restoration to the joints; two head caps have been trimmed; a few rare pinholes; a false title page indicating ‘Volume III’ in Volume I; a name has been painted over with white paint on page 252 of Volume I; the frontispiece of Volume III is partially detached.
