[PRINTED HOURS] Paris, Antoine Chappiel for Gilles Hardouin, 9 January 1504. Book of Hours according to the Roman rite.  In Latin and French, printed on vellum. [Almanac for the years 1497–1520] With 13 large engravings and 32 small engravings; ornate and historiated engraved borders with numerous small engravings, some on dotted backgrounds. Engravings based on the designs of the Master of the Très petites Heures of Anne of Brittany (Master of the Rose of the Apocalypse of the Sainte-Chapelle [MdA]) [‘MdA workshop for Hardouin’; ‘Kleinbilder MdA-Umkreis für Hardouin’]. Large 8vo, 76 ff. [collation: a-i8, A4], preceded and followed by a parchment endpaper, Gothic type (bastard Gothic), initials and line-ends painted in liquid gold on red or blue grounds, engravings in black.   Binding partly antique (covers reattached, blind-stamped decoration comprising ornamental scrolls and multiple fillets) and partly modern (spine remade and underlying covers in modern leather), spine with 7 raised bands, edges gilt. Ribs rubbed, corners blunt. Repair with adhesive paper on the last leaf (sig. A4 verso). Dimensions: 245 x 145 mm. Colophon: ‘These present hours, in the style of Rome, were completed on the 9th day of January in the year one thousand five hundred and four. By Anthoine Chappiel, printer, residing in Paris at the Collège de Triguet in Rue Saint-Jean-de-Latran’ (sig. i8 verso). Colophon followed by a handwritten note (in 16th-century script) concerning the date of the invention of printing.
