Description
[PRINTED HOURS] Paris, Nicolas Higman for Guillaume Eustace, [1516]. The Hours of the Blessed Virgin Mary according to the Roman Rite. In Latin and French, printed on vellum. [Almanac for the years 1516–1530]. In-8, 152 ff., several missing leaves (some leaves trimmed at the outer margins) [collation: a8, b7 (missing b4), c7 (missing c2), d8, e7 (missing e2), f6 (missing f1, f8), g5 (missing g1, g2, g6), h5 (missing h2, h5, h8), i7 (missing i6), k8, l7 (missing l5), m8, n7 (missing n2), o8, p8, a7 (missing a1), b8, c8, d8], preceded and followed by two paper end-papers, ruled in pale red ink, Gothic typeface (‘bastard Gothic’), typographic mark on the title page by Guillaume Eustache, embossed mark (in period colours), some leaves with text framed by a gilt border, initials painted in gold on red or blue backgrounds.   Havana calfskin binding, gilded decoration, plain spine with small flowers and doves in medallions, covers with a scattered teardrop pattern around a medallion formed of laurel wreaths, laurel leaves forming a frame, bouquets of branches and cherubs at the corners, gilt edges, traces of fastenings (missing). Binding slightly rubbed, leather missing from the edges, upper jaw rubbed, corners blunted. Several leaves have been cut out; margins trimmed and cut flush with the text; all original engravings are missing. Dimensions: 160 x 97 mm.   Colophon 1: ‘Hore beate marie virginis ad usum romanum ab longum sine require. Impresse sunt Parisius anno domini mil. quingentesimo.xvi. expensis provide viri Guillermi Eustache librarii regii…’.   Colophon 2: ‘These present hours were printed in Paris for Guillaume Eustache, the King’s sworn bookseller at the University of Paris. Residing on Rue Neuve Notre-Dame at the Agnus Dei or at the palace by the third pillar. And were printed by Nicolas Hygman, book printer”.
