Description
HYGINUS (Caius Julius) Venice, Erhard Ratdolt, 22 January 1485. Poeticon astronomicon. On the world and the spheres, and an explanation of both parts. Small in-4 (20.8 x 15.3 cm), fawn sheepskin, plain ribbed spine, gilt head (modern binding). Third edition. The first edition, published in Ferrara in 1475, contained no illustrations. This edition, the second to be illustrated (by Ratdolt), is adorned with a frontispiece and 47 wood-engraved figures within the text.   These illustrations were commissioned from the Italian engraver Hyeronimus de Sanctis and the German artist Johannes Santritter. Although the work is not entirely accurate, these illustrations inspired and served as a model for the authors of all subsequent star atlases.   Carefully cleaned copy. Minor old handwritten corrections to the frontispiece title (found on most copies). Binding slightly warped. Brown stains on the last 5 folios.   Provenance Philippe Cénac (dry stamp, bearing the motto ‘Que sais-je?’, on the first blank endpaper).   Bibliography USTC, 994235. ISTC, ih00561000. Hain-Copinger, no. 9063. BMC, V, 289.
