Description
LODDIGES (Conrad) London, John, Arthur Arch, 1821. The Botanical Cabinet Consisting of Coloured Delineations of Plants from all Countries. Vol. VI. In-8 (21.1 x 15.6 cm), green long-grain half-maroquin with corner pieces, ribbed spine decorated with gilt motifs on the ribs, marbled edges (contemporary binding). Volume VI alone of *The Botanical Cabinet*, featuring 100 hand-coloured plates. A famous botanical periodical, *The Botanical Cabinet* was founded by the British botanist and horticulturist of German origin, Joachim Conrad Loddiges. Specialising in exotic plants, the Loddiges & Sons nursery was to become one of the most important in the United Kingdom. George Loddiges, Conrad’s son, took over the nursery with his brother William and ran the journal. He began publishing *The Botanical Cabinet* as a book series, which he issued in 20 volumes between 1817 and 1833. The Botanical Cabinet was intended to complement the nursery’s catalogue, showcasing the finest plants available from Loddiges & Sons, illustrated in colour and accompanied by a brief description. Binding worn; the upper cover is detached from the book but remains attached to the spine; title page is stitched; plates are in fine condition despite a few pinholes and foxing, particularly on the early plates.
