Description
MONT-ROCHER (Guy, or MONTE ROCHEN Guido de) Venice, [Damiano de Mediolano de Gorgonzola], 16 November 1493. Manipulus Curatorum. Small quarto (21.4 x 16 cm), brown half-calf on board, studded around the edges, traces of a leather clasp; on the lower cover, a small handwritten title label in red on parchment, studded into a rectangle cut into the board, ribbed spine, handwritten title label (contemporary binding). A rare edition, of which only a few copies are recorded in European public libraries (mainly Italian). The National Library does not hold a copy of this edition at present, nor do any American libraries. This edition is also absent from the main bibliographical catalogues (Goff, Proctor, Polain, Pellechet, etc.)   ‘The *Manipulus curatorum*, composed in the early 14th century, was intended for secular and regular priests, to whom it provided the necessary knowledge regarding the sacraments. It enjoyed considerable success in the late Middle Ages’ (Pascale Charron, on the Arviva website).   An old handwritten table of contents on the first two blank folios. Marginal annotations in at least two different handwriting styles. The initials have been hand-restored.   An interesting contemporary binding, demonstrating the simple yet effective craftsmanship of medieval bookmaking. The binding is very worn, with patches of leather missing; the headbands and ribbons are absent, but it remains sound. There is marginal water staining and some foxing.   Provenance – Cardinal of the Congregation of Saint Mark (beautiful cardinal’s coat of arms painted on the title page, with a very faint handwritten note of provenance). – GL (label bearing the motto ‘Que sais-je?’). – Philippe Cénac (dry stamp, bearing the motto ‘Que sais-je?’, on the title leaf).   Bibliography ISTC, ig00602500. Hain, no. 8207 (who presumably did not see it, judging by the erroneous description he provides).
