BARBEY D’AUREVILLY (Jules) Paris, Dentu, 1874. Les Diaboliques. In-12 (18.5 x 11.6 cm), paperback.   First edition. ‘A very rare and highly sought-after volume, as the print run was partly destroyed following a court case’ (Carteret). Upon its publication, the work was prosecuted by the Seine Public Prosecutor’s Office on grounds of immorality. Of the 2,200 copies printed, 480 copies, which were held by the bookbinder, were destroyed by the author and the publisher.   Cover and spine soiled; a few leaves skilfully restored at the margins.
