In-4 (28.2 x 22 cm), half-havana morocco with corner pieces, ribbed spine decorated with gilded motifs and inlaid with green and red morocco, red title label, trimmed, cover preserved (see Champs).
A collection of short stories illustrated with works by Arcos, Boutet de Monvel, Gambard, Grasset, Jeanniot, Adrien Marie, Mars, Merwarth, Myrbach, Renouard, Rochegrosse and Tirado, reproduced within the text.
A deluxe edition limited to 100 numbered copies on large Japanese paper (no. 52), containing a series of red chalk illustrations (here bound opposite the illustrations in the text).
The half-title page is adorned with a large and very beautiful original watercolour signed by Evert Van Muyden, depicting a scene of a hunt with hounds.
Enclosed is an autograph card signed by Maupassant ([Paris], 83, rue Dulong, [October 1881?]): ‘As my eyes are in a very poor state, it is almost impossible for me to read. That is why it has taken me so long to thank you for sending me your fine book.”
Minor scuffing to the binding.
