Paris, Drosera III, 1954.
Le soleil placé en abîme.
In-4 (27.8 x 18.4 cm), binding with black shagreen edging, covers in lemon-yellow emery paper, with inlays of the author’s and illustrator’s initials in black morocco leather on the top cover, smooth spine with gilt title, gilt head, covers and spine preserved, slipcase.
First edition, illustrated with 7 original etchings by Jacques Hérold. Limited edition of 119 numbered copies; one of 15 on Dutch vellum paper (no. 8), the first paper after a single copy, containing the etchings in two additional states: in black and white on black paper and in colour. All these proofs are signed.
Enclosed is the subscription form, bearing a long handwritten note signed by Ponge to André Lefèvre (4 December 1954): ‘We have both been through a terrible time this year. At the time, I was unable to tell you, but I would like you to sense it: a certain kinship in our sensibilities […] and the fact that we were going through our trials at the same time brought me as close to you as possible. ”
A fine anonymous binding, in the style of Pierre-Lucien Martin.
