Description
[HÉROLD].– SADE (Donatien Alphonse François, Marquis de) Paris, Drosera I, 1950. La Vanille et la Manille. Quarto (27.8 x 18.8 cm), binding with black shagreen edging, orange emery paper covers, with the author’s and illustrator’s initials inlaid in black morocco leather on the upper cover, plain spine with gilt title, gilt head, covers and spine preserved, slipcase.   First edition of this previously unpublished letter to Madame de Sade, written in the Vincennes dungeon in 1783. It is illustrated with 5 original etchings by Jacques Hérold. Limited edition of 119 numbered copies; one of 15 on Dutch vellin paper (no. 2), the first paper following a single copy, containing the etchings in two additional states: in black and white (actually in negative) and in colour. All these prints are signed. A fine anonymous binding, in the style of Pierre-Lucien Martin. Bibliography Bodmer Foundation, *Sade, an atheist in love*, 2014, no. 92.
