[LAURENS].– LUCIEN OF SAMOSATA Paris, Tériade, 1951. Dialogues. Folio (39.5 x 29 cm), in folios, illustrated cover with gilded edging, slipcase and case.   A fine edition illustrated with 33 figures by Henri Laurens, colour woodcuts by Théo Schmied, including the cover and 24 plates. In addition to these figures, there is a table of plates on two leaves, also engraved. ‘Playing with a few colours, particularly black and a dominant hue that varies with each series of characters, he superimposes large geometric cut-outs in a vertical rhythm. Their interplay dominates the space, creating—with very simple means—not only an impression of depth, but also a static energy’ (Chapon). The text is taken from Émile Chambrey’s translation. Limited edition of 275 numbered copies on Arches laid paper, signed by the artist (no. 185).   Cover and slipcase show signs of wear; there are minute pinholes along the edges of the folios.
