Description
PRISSE d’AVENNES (Achille Constant Théodore Émile)
Paris, Arthus Bertrand, 1878.
History of Egyptian Art, based on the monuments.
2 large folio volumes (63 x 49.5 cm), in folios, half-cloth portfolios with laces.
Very rare first edition.
Atlas only, comprising 147 (out of 159) lithographed plates, most in colour, or engraved on steel.
The rarity of the work is attested to by this comment from Brunet: ‘this work was intended to comprise 40 instalments… but so far (September 1862) only 5 have appeared, although a prospectus dated 10 January 1858 announced 6 for sale, and a catalogue by Mr Weigel of Leipzig dated 1860 lists this complete work in 2 vols. containing 160 chromolithographic plates with a volume of text’.”
The portfolios are slightly worn. The edges of the plates are slightly damaged: small wormholes, some plates dusty.
