[ROCHEGROSSE].– - FRANCE (Anatole) Paris, Ferroud, 1925. Le Puits de Sainte Claire. Quarto (27.6 x 19.3 cm), vellum Bradel binding with flaps, covers and spine entirely decorated in gouache and highlighted with gold based on designs by Georges Rochegrosse, gilt title, covers and spine preserved, slipcase and box (Vermorel). Edition illustrated with 38 compositions based on works by Rochegrosse, including 14 plates and 12 headpieces and initials etched in colour by Eugène Decisy, as well as 12 colour woodcut endpieces by Charles Clément. Limited edition of 650 copies, one of 100 on Japanese paper featuring two states of the colour etchings, including the one with corrections, and the separate colour print of the large end-piece illustrations (no. 164). This copy is enhanced by: – An original watercolour signed by de Rochegrosse corresponding to the illustration on p. 64 depicting Nicolas Nerli and his wife. – An autograph manuscript by Anatole France for *Le Puits de Sainte Claire*. 1 p. in-8. First draft, with crossings-out, corresponding to Chapter IV of the work. A very fine copy on Japanese paper, enriched with an original watercolour by Rochegrosse and a manuscript by Anatole France, in a painted binding by Vermorel featuring Rochegrosse’s illustrations (pp. 12 and 53).
