[ROCHEGROSSE].– - PETRONIUS Paris, Louis Conard, 1910. The Satyricon. Quarto (30.5 x 22.8 cm), white parchment Bradel binding, calligraphic title on the spine, gilt head, covers and spine preserved (modern binding). An edition adorned with a frontispiece and three colour-engraved illustrations by Louis Mortier, as well as numerous ornamental elements within the text, colour woodcuts by Beltrand printed in bistre, and a colour border repeated on every page, all after Georges Rochegrosse. Limited edition of 171 numbered copies; one of the 150 on Van Gelder Dutch vellum (no. 156). Included are: – a very fine original composition by Georges Rochegrosse in oil on prepared cardboard, signed lower left (22.6 x 16.7 cm). It depicts the meeting between Polyaenus and Circe, a motif not selected for the engraved figures, but of which at least one watercolour study is known to exist; – an autograph letter signed by Georges Rochegrosse to the translator, Laurent Tailhade, Djenan Meriem [El Biar, Algeria], Monday [1911], 3 pp. in-12. He refers to his correspondent’s book, *Un monde qui finit*, and expresses his ‘admiration for these two superb studies of such ardent lyricism’. He regrets not yet having had time to send him ‘the little sketch of the *Satyricon* which you did me the great honour of admiring. I wanted to bring this sketch here to make […] a few retouches that seemed necessary to me to complete it.’ A few small spots, but a fine copy nonetheless.
