[SURVAGE].– PIEUX (Léonoard, pseudonym of Baroness Hélène d’OETTINGEN) Paris, SIC, 1919–1920. Grant me an audience and I shall recite the verses of an unknown poet with such eloquence that you will immediately wish to make me King, but I shall refuse. Small square folio (36.5 x 32.7 cm), in folios, illustrated cover, slipcase, box.   First edition of this exceptional artist’s book. The volume is entirely engraved in colour on woodblocks, comprising 14 unnumbered folios (including one folded leaf); it contains 14 full-page colour woodcuts by Léopold Survage (including the colophon, the text block and the publisher’s mark, printed in red). The title engraving, reproduced in sepia for the publisher’s cover, is here mounted on the cover produced at a later date. Print run officially limited to 112 numbered copies on China paper, signed by the author and the artist; one of the 28 actually printed (no. 9). The copy has been carefully restored (small tears filled in, frayed edges reinforced).   Provenance Serge Férat (by descent to the current owner).
