Description
LA FONTAINE (Jean de). *The Loves of Psyche and Cupid*, followed by *Adonis*. Paris, Théophile Belin, 1899. 2 volumes in-4°, contemporary pink Bradel-style cardboard binding, untrimmed, modern slipcase. ‘A fine edition illustrated with 26 separate plates (including 2 title plates) printed in colour after Borel’s watercolours, executed in the 18th century for the collector Morel de Vindé. The edition planned at the time was not published due to the Revolution, and the watercolours, acquired by Théophile Belin in 1898, were not engraved by Vigna-Vigneron until more than a century after they were painted.” (Rochambeau, p. 603, no. 46). In this edition, each print is accompanied by two additional states, in pure etching and in bistre. The volumes also include two colour breakdowns of one print, in red, blue, yellow and all three colours combined. A single print run of 250 numbered copies on heavy vellum.
