Description
ROUSSEAU (Jean-Jacques). Complete Works of J.J. Rousseau, Citizen of Geneva. Geneva, n.p., 1782. 30 volumes (24 volumes of the complete works and 6 volumes of supplements), 8vo, full glazed and speckled havana calf, ribbed spine decorated with small gilt metalwork, red edges. Approximately 380 pages per volume. 14 folding plates in volume XVIII. The top caps of 7 volumes are missing, several caps are partially worn away, corners are blunt, and there is a loss of leather on the spine of volume 13. First collected edition of Rousseau’s works and first complete edition, containing the original edition of the first six books of the *Confessions* and that of the *Rêveries du promeneur solitaire* (although some bibliographers, such as Gagnebin, consider the true first edition of the *Confessions* to be the one published a few weeks earlier in large type). This 30-volume edition of 1782 was supplemented in 1789 by three volumes containing the second part of the *Confessions*, which are missing here. [Tchemerzine, X, 68]. In addition to the famous literary and philosophical masterpieces by the solitary and dreamy citizen of Geneva, this collection also includes his proposal for a new system of musical notation, his translations of Seneca and Tacitus, his lyrical works, and his forgotten verse plays with revealing titles such as *Narcissus, or the Lover of Himself*. The final six supplementary volumes contain reactions from Rousseau’s contemporaries to his treatises (comments and refutations, notably by Voltaire) and letters addressed to him. In good overall condition, pages fresh. Collation: Vol. 1: 341 pages (“Discourse on the Origin and Foundations of Inequality Among Men”); Vol. 2: 441 pages (“The Social Contract”, “Considerations on the Government of Poland”); Vol. 3: 355 pages (“Julie, or the New Heloise”); Vol. 4: 464 pages (“Julie, or the New Heloise”); Vol. 5: 419 pages (“Julie, or the New Heloise”); Vol. 6: 383 pages (“Julie, or the New Heloise”); Vol. 7: VIII – 386 pages (“Emile, or On Education”); Vol. 8: 368 pages (“Emile, or On Education”); Vol. 9: 443 pages (“Emile, or On Education”); Vol. 10: 380 pages (“Emile, or On Education”, “Emile and Sophie, or The Solitaries”); Vol. 11: 492 pages (Miscellaneous Writings, letters to M. de Beaumont, letter to d’Alembert, reply to an anonymous letter, On Theatrical Imitation); Vol. 12: VIII – 448 pages (“Letters on the Mountain”); Vol. 13: 342 pages (“Discourse on the Question: What is the Most Necessary Virtue for Heroes?”); Vol. 14: 535 pages (translations of Tacitus and Seneca, essays and letters on botany); Vol. 15: 374 pages (plays and poetry); Vol. 16: 427 pages (essays and treatises on music, “Essay on the Origin of Languages”, letters); Vol. 17: 524 pages (“Dictionary of Music”) ; Vol. 18: 367 pages (“Dictionary of Music” accompanied by 15 fold-out plates (1 plate showing the notation system for all keys and clefs, and 13 plates labelled A to N; no plate labelled J)); Vol. 19: 349 pages (the first four books of the *Confessions*); Vol. 20: 349 pages (books 5 and 6 of the *Confessions*, *Rêverie du promeneur solitaire*); T21: 387 pages (“Rousseau as Judge of Jean-Jacques”); T22: 313 pages (“Rousseau as Judge of Jean-Jacques”); T23: 458 pages (essays on various subjects, letters); Vol. 24: 584 pages (letters on morality, philosophy and politics); Vol. 25: 403 pages (supplements); Vol. 26: 469 pages (supplements); Vol. 27: 398 pages (supplements); Vol. 28: 445 pages (supplements); Vol. 29: 455 pages (supplements); Vol. 730: 461 pages (supplements).
