Pierre Anquetil (1723–1806) devoted the bulk of his historical research to the reigns of Henry IV and Louis XIV. With his *Histoire de France*, he offers a narrative approach to national history to facilitate a continuous reading experience, which had previously been hindered by imposing volumes intended primarily for reference. Its success led, after his death, the historians Jean-Pierre Gallais (1756–1820) and N. A. Dubois to continue the work in turn, up to the reign of Louis XVIII.
A fine set in attractive Romantic-style bindings.
