Description
ANQUETIL, Louis-Pierre. A History of France from the Gauls to the Death of Louis XVI by Mr Anquetil. And from that time to the Treaty of 20 November 1815 by Mr Gallais. Continued from 1815 to the accession of His Majesty Charles X to the throne by Mr D***. Paris, J.S. Quesné, 1829. 12 volumes, each bound in green half-maroquin with corners edged with double gilt fillets, spines with richly decorated raised bands, gilt heads. Not collated. Spines sun-faded, some foxing. A fine edition, supplemented by a historical note on the life and works of Mr Anquetil by Mr Dacier. The final volume, containing the table of contents, is printed in two columns. Pierre Anquetil (1723–1806) devoted the bulk of his historical research to the reigns of Henry IV and Louis XIV. With his *Histoire de France*, he offers a narrative approach to national history to facilitate a continuous reading experience, which had previously been hindered by imposing volumes intended primarily for reference. Its success led, after his death, the historians Jean-Pierre Gallais (1756–1820) and N. A. Dubois to continue the work in turn, up to the reign of Louis XVIII. A fine set in attractive Romantic-style bindings.
