A rare copy with the colour atlas, containing 17 large fold-out plates depicting 278 plants, all enhanced with brushwork. Paris, Roret, 1836. 3 volumes, including 1 atlas, in-8 (215 x 140 mm). Red half-basane, smooth spine with a romantic design of foliage in gold, title and volume number in gilt letters. Contemporary binding. (4) - 496 pp.; (4) - 497 pp. - 1048 pp. - (2); (2) and 17 plates for the atlas. Leather slightly faded, a few foxing spots, a small tear with no loss to plate 12. Third edition, completely revised and ‘updated to reflect the latest knowledge’. An excellent theoretical and practical work, published in Roret’s famous encyclopaedic series. This dictionary is the result of a collaboration between doctors, pharmacists and naturalists, edited by Julia de Fontenelle (1790–1842), a chemist and pharmacist, founder and president of the Paris Society of Physical and Chemical Sciences. A fine copy in a romantic binding of the period.
