Description
ARENE, Paul. Gambetta. 1869–1879. A copy containing a pasted-in period photograph of Gambetta, as well as several articles about him, including one by Jules Vallès on his funeral. Paris, Neuchâtel and Geneva, Sandoz and Fischbacher, Jules Sandoz and Desrogis, 1879. In-12, peacock-blue half-percaline Bradel binding, smooth spine decorated with a fleur-de-lis, black leather title label, upper edge gilt, covers preserved. 516 pp., frontispiece portrait. Some minor scuffing and slight foxing. First edition of this anonymous work (actually by Paul Arène, 1843–1896) devoted to Gambetta during the period 1869–1879. A typogravure portrait frontispiece illustrates the volume. Our copy includes a photograph of Gambetta (probably by Etienne Carjat, c. 1875–1880, 12.5 x 9 cm, with a few slight white spots) pasted opposite the title page. It also includes an anonymous handwritten note identifying the true author, as well as three newspaper articles from the period, two of which are leaflets that have been cut out and pasted onto unnumbered white sheets at the end of the volume. The first, by Jules Vallès and entitled ‘Gambetta’, appeared in the daily newspaper *Le Réveil* on 8 January 1883, representing the final critique of the radical by one of the leading figures of the Commune. An interesting copy, in good condition.
