Description
[TEXTILE ART] TRENKWALD, Hermann and SARRE, Friedrich. Ancient Oriental Carpets. Volumes One and Two.
An invaluable contribution to the history of textile art in the Near and Middle East, featuring 120 illustrated plates with commentary in two in-plano volumes.
Paris, Editions Albert Lévy for the French edition (Vienna and Leipzig, Anton Schroll & Co and Karl W. Hiersemann), 1927 and 1929.
2 in-plano volumes, in a green half-percale slipcase with flaps and gilt titles running lengthways, covers of sturdy brown paper.
Vol. 1: 20 pp. and 60 plates; Vol. 2: 44 pp. and 60 plates.
Covers slightly worn with a few tears and paper loss on the flaps. Minor foxing on the first few pages.
A major reference work in the study of Oriental carpets, complete in two volumes. A total of 120 plates, more than half of which are in colour, presented in captioned tables providing technical information on the motifs, knotting techniques and geographical origin of the carpets.
This monumental study is distinguished by the scientific approach taken by the German archaeologist and orientalist Friedrich Sarre (1865–1945), who headed the Islamic section of the Museum of Islamic Art in Berlin from 1921 to 1931.
Translated by Lucien Herr.
A very fine collection.
