Description
[LISZT – JANINA, Olga]. Memoirs of a Pianist. A Reply to *Memoirs of a Cossack*. First edition of this satirical and fictional novel, published anonymously in 1874 by Olga Janina, in which she imagines Franz Liszt’s reply to her own sentimental account (Memoirs of a Cossack), in a passionate, provocative and fanciful portrayal of their stormy relationship. Paris, published by Lachaud and Burdin, 1874. In-12 (186x123mm), aubergine half-maroquin, smooth spine adorned with a long gilt decoration of mosaic flowers, gilt head, illustrated cover preserved. Binding by Victor Champs. 255 pages. Minor scuffing to the corners from handling. A rarity in its first edition, with a preface signed by G*** and dated September 1874, and the fragile cover signed by Legrand – one cannot fail to recognise Liszt from behind. A novel written by the eccentric young pianist Olga Janina, who was spurned by the ageing musician she pursued relentlessly until she had squandered her entire fortune. 19th-century ex-libris bearing a coat of arms and the motto ‘Durum Patientia vincit’. A fine copy in a lovely signed binding.
